So, you’ve established your purpose, worked through what needed to be improved, and you’re ready for the next step in opening your business venture.
Time to open the doors, right? Not quite yet. The next thing you’re going to do is research. A lot of it.
Why This Step Matters
The amount of research you need will depend on your industry and your current administrative skill level, but every business requires preparation, even if you are opening a business in a field you already have experience in. Most people want to skip to the exciting parts of starting a business. The businesses that last are built on preparation, not guesswork. Research is not a delay. It is another pillar in your foundation. Time to dust off those school research and writing skills to start organizing the framework of your business.
Skipping this step can lead to:
Missed legal requirements
Underestimated costs
Incorrectly priced services or products
Operational issues that could have been avoided
Unneeded stress
What You Actually Need to Research
You need structured, organized research that covers all aspects of operating your business.
1. Industry Rules and Regulations
Industry specific licensing requirements
OSHA requirements
Health department involvement
Safety and compliance standards
2. Government Requirements
Local business licenses
Secretary of State registration for one or multiple states
Federal requirements such as EIN or nonprofit registration
Where you operate matters. Requirements can vary by state, county, and city.
3. Financial and Administrative Setup
Business bank accounts
Accounting systems
Expense tracking
Tax responsibilities
4. Operations and Logistics
Can you operate with just a mailing address or do you need a physical location
If you need a location: Rent, utilities, and setup costs
Inventory, supplies, and equipment requirements
5. Staffing and Payroll
Employees or contractors
Pay rates and compensation structure
Payroll taxes and compliance requirements
Policies and organizational structure
6. Cost, Time, and Capability
For everything you research, ask:
How much does this cost
How long will this take
Can I do this myself or do I need help
7. Business Name
Start thinking about your business name during this phase
Have multiple options ready in case your first choice is already taken
Check your state’s business registry for availability
If you plan to grow into a larger or national brand, search the federal trademark database to avoid conflicts
Choose a name that reflects your purpose and can grow with you in size, location, and overall offerings
Some things you can handle on your own. Some things require professionals, and that is okay.
Stay Organized While You Do This
Do not try to keep all of this in your head. Create an outline or system with sections for:
Legal
Financial
Operations
Staffing
Timeline
Track:
Costs
Deadlines
Requirements
What is completed and what is still pending
Organization here saves time, money, and stress later.
Set Priorities and Build a Timeline
Not everything has to be done at once, but everything does need a plan. This is how you move forward without feeling overwhelmed.
Identify what must be done first
Set realistic timelines
Work on multiple items at the same time when possible
